American Language Center Rabat
The American Language Center (ALC) Rabat is an English language school in the Hassan neighbourhood of Rabat, Morocco’s capital. The first ALCs in Rabat and Tangier were founded in the 1950s by the US Embassy, and since the 1970s the Rabat centre has been run independently as a Moroccan non-profit through the American Cultural Association (ACA). It is funded solely by tuition and has no government affiliation. The school calls itself the only American Language Center in the Rabat area, and it is one of twelve ALCs across Morocco. It runs from two buildings, a main site and an annex, offers over 450 classes a week and serves nearly 20,000 customers a year. It is also an official Cambridge CELTA teacher-training centre.
ALC Rabat teaches English to learners of all ages and levels, with courses arranged by term (adults) or by year (children and juniors). Adult courses (ages 15+) run 3 hours a week in classes of 8–20, with advanced learners using the Canvas learning platform. The Juniors & Young Adults programme (ages 12–14) is a new one that takes high-level young learners up to CEFR C1. Children aged 4–11 follow an annual programme with 2 hours a week. Special courses include Business English, TOEFL preparation, Baccalaureate preparation, English for Special Purposes and corporate classes, and content-based “proficiency modules” in the arts and sciences.
The school’s students are children, teenagers, university students, adults and working professionals, mostly from the Rabat area. Learners are placed by language aptitude and grouped with classmates of similar age and level, and the school stresses that classes are never mixed. A dedicated customer-service and academic team supports students and parents. Teachers are internationally certified, many holding the CELTA, and lessons make use of tools such as Kahoot! and Canvas, with Exam.net used for secure assessments.
Beyond its courses, ALC Rabat runs more than 30 weekly clubs plus cultural activities and events, community service and volunteering programmes, and a library. It also offers professional development and teacher training, including CELTA, and corporate programmes.
